Balestard was the name of a medieval Canon of the Chapter of Saint-Émilion. Tonnelle refers to a domed tower that still exists today in the middle of the vineyard. The wineÂs reputation goes back to the 15th century when the famous French poet François Vilon spoke of it in one of his poems. (See it quoted on the label.) Jacques Capdemourlin has managed the 14-hecatare estate, Château Cap de Mourlin, since 1974.

Terroir: 10.6 hectares of chalky clay soil situated on an imposing plateau.
Vinification: In cement and stainless steel vats for two to three weeks. Aged in 1/3 new barrels, 1/3 one or two year-old barrels and 1/3 stainless steel vats for 12 to 16 months.
Alcohol: 12.5%
Tasting: Spicy, fruity, interesting nose. Attractive suppleness and lots of fruit on the fine, fresh, soft palate.
Food Pairing: When a special red meat meal calls for the opulence of a fine grand crû, this Saint-Émilion will make it truly memorable. Cellaring: At its peak now and for another year.
