BAN SUM
Castello Banfi's innovative spirit and winemaking expertise is demonstrated in all its wines, but none embodies these qualities as prominently as SummuS. A wine of towering elegance, SummuS is an extraordinary blend of Sangiovese (used regionally to make the famed Brunello di Montalcino) which contributes body; Cabernet Sauvignon, fruit and structure; and Syrah, elegance, character and a fruity bouquet. Each wine is individually vinified and aged one year in French oak barrique to develop its unique style, then masterfully interwoven with the others to achieve a rare dimension of taste. Additional 14 -16 months of bottle-aging brings forth a fragrant bouquet of fruit, oak and spice. SummuS is characterized by a rich color and lively dance of ripe soft-fruit flavors. SummuS marries well with all red meats, stews, hearty pasta dishes and cheeses. Grape variety 40% Sangiovese (Banfi Clonal Selection), 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah Growing Conditions A textbook example of a great vintage. The entire season presented optimal conditions for the vine, offering outstanding results for both early and later maturing varieties. Winter rainfall supplied sufficient water reserves that were useful to the plant over a summer that was hot but not torrid. Over a cool spring the vines developed balance that they maintained into the autumn. Light mid-summer rainfall helped stabilize the plants metabolism and develop ideal tannins and phenols, resulting in deeply colored wines. A proper variation between day and night temperatures allowed the grapes to develop intense varietal aromas and remain in perfect condition for harvest. Date of Harvest Syrah - starting September 16,Sangiovese - starting September 18, Cabernet - starting September 21 Fermentation Method: In temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks except for 35% Cabernet in oak Temperature: Syrah: varying from 15°-20°C,Sangiovese: varying from 20°-35°C,Cabernet Sauvignon: varying from 15°-25°C Length: Syrah 13, Sangiovese 18, Cabernet 10 days Malolactic: Yes, occurring naturally in barrique Length of barrel aging: 17-20 months likely (12 months separately, 9 months as blend) Origin of barrel: Syrah: Allier (France) Percentage of new barrel: Syrah 30%, Sangiovese 25%, Cabernet 35% Special comment by the wine maker: SYRAH: This vintage has without a doubt produced the most complete and expressive Syrah in the history of its production at the Castello Banfi estate, which is why we increased its percentage in the blend. SANGIOVESE: This varietal contributes a freshness and fruitiness but, above all, rich color, as can be achieved only in great vintages. With its elegance and firm tannic grip, it balances the gentility of the syrah and the power of the cabernet. CABERNET SAUVIGNON: Generous as always in its body but surprising in this vintage for its power and richness as well as the fresh, fruity character of its bouquet. BLEND: It has achieved an expression of our winemaking goals from the moment of harvest - a wine that is full-bodied with good velvety, modern tannins, rich in color and bouquet, bearing a long and complex finish. A wine that can be enjoyed in its youth but will improve greatly as it ages.Category | Red Wines |
