BS BRU16
The Biondi-Santi flagship wine, the Brunello di Montalcino embodies the spirit of Tenuta Greppo and the signature style of our winemakers, forged over 150 years of history with its balanced combination of fresh elegance, depth and aristocratic personality.
VINTAGE 2016: A rainy winter was followed by a quite rainy spring but with mild temperatures. The summer brought sun, warmth and stability with temperatures lower than the seasonal average. Rainfalls between the end of August and the beginning of September extended the pre-harvest time, favouringa very slow but balanced ripening of the grapes where the fruit benefitted from important day / night temperature swings, which enriched their aromatic notes. Harvest started on September 19th, with over a week’s delay compared to Biondi-Santi normal standards.
The 2016 Brunello is a wine of light and energy. On the nose crispy notes of sour cherries, blood oranges and small red berry fruits are accompanied by scents of Mediterranean balsamic herbs and a touch of flint. On the palate energy, sweet fruit and silky tannins form a caressing sensation of elegance and equilibrium, leading us towards a long-lingering finish with a distinct savoury touch – fresh and clean.
ORIGIN: The 2016 Brunello was produced exclusively with a selection of Sangiovese Grosso coming from our proprietary vineyards.
AGEING: The 2016 Brunello has been vinified in vitrified concrete tanks by using indigenous yeasts, selected in our vineyards. Successively, it was aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 3 years.
ALCOHOL CONTENT: 14%
“Spending one’s lifetime working amid nature, in this country blessed by God, is wonderful.”
Franco Biondi Santi
It is a rare phenomenon that a wine can trace its origins to a single man. Brunello di Montalcino, however, owes its existence to the creative genius of Clemente Santi and his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi who in the eighteen hundreds started producing barrel-aged single-varietal wines in Montalcino, betting on the extraordinary quality potential of Sangiovese grosso.
Since 1888, the first vintage of Brunello in history, Biondi-Santi has continued to produce wines renowned for their elegance and extraordinary longevity.
No compromise. Only a painstaking, yet simple attention to detail and an artisanal sense of excellence accompanies the production of the Brunello Biondi-Santi, that is produced exclusively with estate grown grapes, hand selected from our high-altitude vineyards. It is fermented in cement vats with the use of indigenous yeasts only and aged in traditional large Slavonian oak casks.
